Week 5 Power Rankings
Well, this week sure didn’t make the rankings any clearer. In fact, for this week at least I’ve scrapped the equally-sized three-tiered system in favor of four unequally-sized ones. Within each tier, numbering is basically a toss-up; your guess is as good as mine.
On the Brink of Collapse
Right now, the Minions are in a class of their own in a very unfortunate way. They’re averaging almost 10 pts/game fewer than the next lowest scoring team and 30 pts/game fewer than the top scoring team – a remarkable lack of success given how tightly the rest of the league is bunched.
12. Minions
Record: 1-4; Last week’s ranking: 12
Didn’t really see anything this week to give this team much hope. When two roster spots are devoted to Browns kickers, you know there’s trouble. At least Brees is coming back and Edwards appears to have gotten back on track.
Inconsistent, but Flashes of Greatness
These teams have put together one or two good weeks, but for whatever reason, haven’t lived up to their potential week in and week out. Still, any and all appear to be capable of getting on a hot streak and turning their fortunes around.
11. Cactus!! WATCH OUT!!
Record: 2-3; Last week’s ranking: 7
For the second week in a row, byes hurt them. They’ve really hit a rough patch here and now need to try to turn things around against a couple of pretty solid teams.
10. The Schmuckernators
Record: 1-4; Last week’s ranking: 6
Heart-breaking defeat last week. They’re still near the top in points scored, but only one win to show for it. Remember when this team looked unstoppable in week one? And now they have to go up against the Blitzers…
9. BullerBezoarBonanza
Record: 2-3; Last week’s ranking: 11
Thrilling last second victory gives this team hope for climbing back to .500 and right back into the thick of the standings. Amazing what a couple of wins in a row can do for a team’s outlook.
8. Blinder Squirrels
Record: 2-3; Last week’s ranking: 5
Made it close at the end, but they still lost to a team playing a receiver on his bye week. This is surely the most underperforming team in the league right now, at least when it comes to scoring. Good news? There’s still time to right the ship.
7. Clay Davis All-Stars
Record: 2-3; Last week’s ranking: 10
This team survives a brutal bye week and gets a win. And for one week at least, the recent trade looks like it will pay huge dividends. Did they luck into another great team?
6. Cool Runnings
Record: 2-3; Last week’s ranking: 9
Finally break out in a huge way with an impressive win. Sure it’s only one week, but that was the kind of signature win that can define a season. Now, was it an aberration, or can they get any consistency?
Solid but Flawed
What separates this group from those behind them is quite simple: better overall results. These teams have only had one or two bad weeks, rather than only one or two good weeks. Granted, only five games provides a pretty small sample size; within a few weeks we could see a lot of bouncing back and forth between these groups.
5. Granite Daisies
Record: 3-2; Last week’s ranking: 2
Right now, injuries are killing this team more than anyone else in the league. If they ever get all healthy they’ll be in great shape considering the results they’ve gotten thus far.
4. Cupcakes of Doom!
Record: 3-2; Last week’s ranking: 3
Another tough loss despite a solid effort. They’re still well positioned maintain upper division status all season.
3. Kenny Gee Willikers
Record: 4-1; Last week’s ranking: 8
After consecutive strong weeks knocking off the upper-echelon teams seeded right below them, it seems that this team has the depth to compete. Quite a turn-around from the first few weeks, and accordingly, it’s time for a major ranking correction.
2. Fat Cats
Record: 3-2; Last week’s ranking: 4
The Cats performed horribly this week, but steal a win. With great reluctance, we’ll move them up to this spot, but they’ll have to start putting up bigger numbers if they’re going to hold it.
The Rabbit
It’s too early to crown them just yet, but the Blitzers have definitely been pacing the field thus far…and getting better each week. Got to like their chances for winning another regular season title.
1. Ritzy Blitzers
Record: 5-0; Last week’s ranking: 1
Another great week for a team that’s clicking on all cylinders. They’re clearly the team to beat right now.
