URK 2011: Week 1 Power Rankings

Yep, football’s back! Pretty special week we just had there…sure,it took a while to really feel like it got going (thanks, Thursday), but by Monday night nearly every game had tightened up considerably. Couple of great comebacks and a few near ones as well!

From my end, this voting seems to be going well. Any comments/suggestions? Sure, there’s a few (ahem) unusual ballots coming in (and perhaps I’ll start calling out certain egregious votes)but on the whole it’s probably working about as well as any coaches poll could be expected to. So, without further ado…

12. Jehovah's Jockstrap
W-L: 0-1
Last Week: 10
Average Ballot Position: 10.5

Pretty rough week for the Godly ones. Not much scoring up and down the entire lineup, and only McFadden really looked like anything special. It won’t always be this bad, but it will be most of the time, I bet.

11. Minions
W-L: 0-1
Last Week: 12
Average Ballot Position: 9.8

Had a pretty decent game but got clipped at the end by a more dynamic team. I expect them to recover, but, man, what a rough schedule to open the year – their next four games are against the league’s current top four teams.

10.SayHi2YourMother4Me
W-L: 0-1
Last Week: 5
Average Ballot Position: 9.1 (1)

Horrific week, only one TD, and basically everything that could go wrong did. Injuries are decimating this team right now. If they can avoid getting completely buried in the short term there could be some hope, but the next little while looks pretty bleak.

9. Rostrum Records
W-L: 0-1
Last Week: 6
Average Ballot Position: 7.6

Captain heartbreak loses again! Last year’s least lucky team falls again, this time by a mere 0.06 points – the closest game in the league’s history (at least, that I can remember)! And the Pittsburgh defense (!) was one of only two starters to score negative points this week. Unbelievable.

8. Cupcakes of DOOM!
W-L: 1-0
Last Week: 11
Average Ballot Position: 7.6

Exciting comeback win for a team nearly done in by over-management. Plenty of explosive players on this roster allow for it to survive things like starting Sanchez over Brees. While week-to-week consistency doesn’t look like a given (at least yet), there’s no doubt that these guys can hang with anyone on a good week.

7. Bacon Cheeseburgers
W-L: 1-0
Last Week: 3
Average Ballot Position: 6.7

Won a squeaker of a game, but took a pretty hard hit in the court of the voters opinion. Tough break to lose their kicker on the opening play of the season, and SJax after only a few plays, but at least they survived and snagged the W; now, can they replace a couple of starters?

6. Obese Geese
W-L: 1-0
Last Week: 8
Average Ballot Position: 6.6

Won in thoroughly uninspiring fashion, led by (who else?) Cedric Benson. There’s probably too much talent here for them to be this bad every week, and it’s a good sign to win on (what appears to be) an off week.

5. The Schmuckernators
W-L: 1-0
Last Week: 7
Average Ballot Position: 5.2

Strong efforts by all their headline performers helped the Schmuckernators out this week. That’s the good news; the bad news is that the depth on this team is worrisome right now – if they could shore up the RB situation, for example, they’d be even more of a threat to be reckoned with.

4. The Dyin' SharkLions
W-L: 0-1
Last Week: 4
Average Ballot Position: 4.9

A furious comeback led by Brady going all kinds of redonkulous fell short, but overall there was a lot of positive for the number two scoring team thus far. There needs to be, because the schedule doesn’t get any easier in the next weeks against the Sheep and Z’s.

3. A Sheep at the Wheel
W-L: 0-1
Last Week: 2
Average Ballot Position: 4.7

Tough blow to lose the first game in that fashion, with Tolbert going nuts on the bench while Chris Johnson struggled mightily. Who’d have seen that coming? Still, the Sheep looked mostly good; now, can they bounce back with an early season win against a good opponent?

2. Stars
W-L: 1-0
Last Week: 9
Average Ballot Position: 3.6 (5)
The week’s top performer makes a huge leap in the rankings (foreseen by yours truly!). They easily scored the most TD’s this week (8), so it’s not clear yet if this success is sustainable week in and out. But, for one game at least, nearly everything went right – and just imagine if Schaub had had a typical game!

1. Z Power
W-L: 1-0
Last Week: 1
Average Ballot Position: 2.4 (5)

A thrilling come-from-behind victory solidified the Z’s hold on first place. The receivers went hog-wild, led by Welker and his preposterous 99-yard-4th-quarter TD, helping to make up for a surprisingly lackadaisical ground game. Still, looks pretty solid at the top!
