The 2008 Guide to the URK Playoffs!
Now that the riff-raff has been cleared away, it all comes down to putting together three good games in a row. Who will emerge victorious? And more importantly, can you call the trifecta? Stay tuned!
The Favorite: The Home Pwners
The home market hasn’t collapsed here. The team to beat all year long just hopes to perform, keeping things status-quo. Best record, most points, most games over 100 points…it will take a near-perfect game to knock them off.
Odds of taking home the crown: 4-6
The Hottest Team: Blind Squirrels
Something clicked for the Squirrels halfway through the season, and since then they have been on a tear, marching through good and bad opponents alike. They have a great draw; is this the year they finally break through to the championship game?
Odds: 4-1
The Overachievers: Incomprehensibles
At the beginning of the year, this looked like a pretty mediocre team. But they hung around for a while, started playing better and better, and all of a sudden this team enters the postseason with the longest winning streak of anyone in the league. If they can keep getting all around support, that streak will continue.
Odds: 20-1
The Underachievers: The Dngrs Dngrs
One of only three teams to be ranked at the top at some point this year, the Dngrs ended the season only winning two of their final seven. There are enough marquee names in the lineup to put up a good fight, but they’ve been dealing with injuries and haven’t been performing all that well. Can this roster come together in time?
Odds: 5-1
The Dark Horse: The Schmuckernators
For a team that is third highest scoring in the league and has broken 100 points in nine of thirteen games, they sure have had some tough luck. On paper, they are one of the few who can hang with the Pwners, but first they have to break out of a three game losing streak which set them up poorly in the draw.
Odds: 8-1
The Enigma: Brett’s Benzos BID
Hard to know what to expect from these guys. In the beginning of the year, they were pretty good but only won about half their games. At the end of the year, they were pretty bad, but still won about half their games. The injury/suspension bug has not been kind to them, but they just might come around and rip the heart right out of someone’s chest.
Odds: 30-1
The Down-But-Not-Yet-Out: Cool Runnings
After a strong start, everything has fallen apart for these guys. They are the lowest scoring team to make the playoffs and face an uphill battle to validate the excitement over their fast start. On the other hand, if they regain that early season magic, they might steal a win or two.
Odds: 40-1
The Just Happy to Be Here: Inglorious Bat Turds
After a horrendous start to the season, the Turds caught fire (relatively speaking) over the middle of the season before cooling to a steady state of lukewarm-ness. Nevertheless, they made it in despite a losing record, giving the Miller Bros. 25% of the participants in this year’s edition of the tourney.
Odds: 50-1
(Overround: 20.16)
Round 1 Predictions:
(1) The Home Pwners over (8) Inglorious Bat Turds
This might be a surprisingly close matchup, but the Pwners should pull it out in the end. They just have too many weapons for the Turds to hang with them.
(2) Blind Squirrels over (7) Cool Runnings
Two teams going in opposite directions. The Squirrels are peaking at the right time of the year, while the Runnings are fading fast. The trend continues.
(6) Brett Benzos BID over (3) Incomprehensibles
We have to predict at least one upset, and the Incomprehensibles, despite a great regular season campaign, are the most vulnerable of the higher ranked seeds. The BID are plenty capable of pulling the upset off.
(4) The Dngrs Dngrs over (5) The Schmuckernators
The most exciting first round matchup on paper, with two teams quite capable of going all the way. The Schmucks three game skid began at the hand of the Dngrs a few weeks ago, so we’ll give the Dngrs the ever-so-slight edge in the rematch.
