Week 9 Power Rankings
Week 9 Power Rankings
Upsets galore this week, as two of the top three and three of the top six go down to lesser teams. Here’s what to watch for over the final month:
The Battle for the Top Seed:
Essentially down to a two-horse race between the Pwners and the Schmuckernators, with the upper hand to the Pwners due to a commanding lead in point differential. Three others still have an outside shot, but they all depend on Cool Runnings pulling off the upset next week, plus additional help.
The Battle for the Three Seed:
Assuming the top two don’t completely collapse over the next 4 games, it now appears that it is down to three very good teams – the Dngrs Dngrs, Cool Runnings, and Brett’s Benzos BID – trying to snag that vital third top 3 seed and avoid not only an especially tough 4-5 showdown in the first round of the playoffs, but also the number one seed in the following round. The Dngrs still hold the inside position despite a bad slump over the last three weeks, while the BID has been on the outside of this upper group all year but has the advantage of head to head meetings with both of these teams and thus the ability to control their fate.
The Mediocre Seeds:
With a solid two game lead over the next cluster of teams, seeds six and seven will almost certainly go to the Blind Squirrels and the Incomprehensibles, though not necessarily in that order. At this point, there doesn’t appear to be much advantage to either position – a tough first round matchup will await no matter what – but at least they will have the chance to play the spoiler.
The Last Spot:
Three teams have realistic chances for the final spot – the Inglorious Bat Turds, the Cupcakes of Doom, and the Fat Cats. Of these, the Bat Turds are clearly the best of the bunch and would be the most dangerous eight seed; however, they have also been unable string together enough victories to have anything more than a point differential lead to show for it. All three have tough finishing schedules – two victories will likely be enough for the Bat Turds, while the Cupcakes might need three and the Fat Cats almost certainly need three to slip into that final slot.
On the Outside Looking In:
Although making up the point differential isn’t entirely out of reach if things fall the right way, Cactus Look Out really needs to run the table to have any hope of making the playoffs. Unless the Pwners forfeit their matchup in two weeks, that won’t happen. And even if the Minions win out, they have too much ground to make up to have any shot of going dancing this year. These two teams still have several chances to play spoiler and affect the races above them – as we just saw this past week with the Minions putting an all-but-fatal dent in the Dngrs chances for the number one seed.
A quick team-by-team update:
1. The Home Pwners (Record 7-2, Standings: 1, Previous Week PR: 1)
The Pwners seize control of the standings with another dominating performance.
2. The Schmuckernators (Record 7-2, Standings: 2, Previous Week PR: 2)
Ugly, ugly loss from a team that was riding high. Granted, they were missing Brees, but this team should put up better numbers than this.
3. Cool Runnings (Record 6-3, Standings: 5, Previous Week PR: 4)
Not a good effort but managed to grab the victory, even minus a few important parts.
4. The Dngrs Dngrs (Record 6-3, Standings: 3, Previous Week PR: 3)
After the unbelievable start, they’ve suddenly fallen on hard times with another damaging loss. Was this week rock bottom, or do they have farther to fall?
5. Brett’s Benzos BID (Record 6-3, Standings: 4, Previous Week PR: 5)
Not an overwhelming performance, but it was another quietly good effort. They have a big showdown next week which could really solidify their position.
6. Blind Squirrels (Record 5-4, Standings: 6, Previous Week PR: 6)
Tough loss for a team looking to prove they belonged with the elite. Now the schedule gets really tough really fast.
7. Incomprehensibles (Record 5-4, Standings: 7, Previous Week PR: 8)
Once again the Incomprehensibles play David to one of the Goliaths in the league. This team is a great underdog story as they are still over .500 – who saw that coming after the first week of the season?
8. Inglorious Bat Turds (Record 3-6, Standings: 8, Previous Week PR: 7)
Tough loss, though they still put up solid numbers considering the number of key players on bye this week.
9. Cupcakes of Doom! (Record 3-6, Standings: 9, Previous Week PR: 9)
Another disappointing showing from a team that had shown signs of life the last two weeks.
10. Fat Cats (Record 3-6, Standings: 10, Previous Week PR: 11)
Big victory at the right time to keep those playoff hopes alive.
11. Cactus. Look out! (Record: 2-7, Standings: 11, Previous Week PR: 10)
A couple of outstanding individual efforts, but a lot more weak showings. Despite the low total, they still had a lead going into the 4th quarter of Monday night’s game with a chance to steal the win.
12. Minions (Record 1-8, Standings: 12, Previous Week PR: 12)
Congrats to the Minions for snagging their first win of the year, and over a pretty good team to boot. By far their best effort of the season, but unfortunately it’s too late to make any sort of run.
