URK 2014 Wrap Up
One more season in the books, and what a doozy! Congrats to ChalicePastryCarnage, who just submitted one of the greatest single-season efforts in league history: best overall record ever (14-2), including both a regular season and playoff championship, and victories over every single team in the league! They finally broke through to claim an elusive playoff trophy, and in stunning fashion. The only comparable single season was Rostrum Records dominant 2011 campaign, which also included regular season and playoff championships.
Let’s dive a little deeper into the CPCs remarkable season, using the Season Score metric introduced a month ago. Not only did they lead the pack in the regular season, but a dominant playoff run extended their overall margin to over 0.5 standard deviations above the next place team. The only time the margin between the best and second best was larger the aforementioned RR season, which slightly ranks slightly higher by for outscoring the competition by more points despite one fewer win. Truly remarkable!
If we take a longer historical view, this is likely the greatest three-year stretch in league history and cements the CPCs as a true dynasty; the only comparable run was comprised of Jaron’s 2006-2010 teams which finished either 1st or 2nd by the Season Score metric a remarkable 5 straight years! Here’s a very busy plot of all the Season Scores over time. You may enjoy following your team’s progression over the years, if you can make it out.
While the CPCs rightfully dominate the end of year conversation, some other things happened this year. Let’s spend a few moments remembering the other teams:
Quality Contorl: A great run that came up just short of a championship for the second straight year. As a minor consolation, they have now leapfrogged into the top overall owner spot with a third straight top-3 finish. Nice!
Cool Runnings: At the end of the regular season, CR looked like the team to beat – and then it all fell apart the final two weeks as their high variance strategy came crashing down. Still, a great run overall, and a season to be proud of.
Obese Geese: A top-4 regular season shifted into high gear in the playoffs, as they outscored everyone over the final three weeks. While they came up just shy of the championship, it was still a great year for a team that has cemented itself as perhaps the best playoff team in the league.
Stars: An above-average year, though certainly disappointing after the strength of last year’s team. It’s the first time in three years that the Stars have missed the end of the year podium, but they’ll be back.
Yakety Sacks: Two playoff wins and a 5th place playoff finish salvage a bit of a down year. Still a clear upper division team, but they’d really like to reclaim the glory of a few season’s back…
TBD2: They never finished naming their team, and never finished the season either. After a scorching start, TBD2 really collapsed down the second half of the regular season and playoffs. Still, a nice bounce back after last year’s tough run.
The Schmuckernators: Back in the playoffs after last year’s disaster; though they never quite could be considered among the upper echelon, they at least avoided the basement. Unlike...
Z Power: Tough year.
Bacon Cheeseburgers: Tough year.
Minions: Tough year.
Cactus Watch Out!: Really tough year.
Hope you enjoyed the season as much as I did. See you all next year!

Thanks for all your work on the reviews this year Danny, always fun to read!
Thanks Danny for the season review. I really enjoy and appreciate your witty commentary and analysis.
Throughout the season I didn't say much simply because I didn't want to jinx my record. I love being in this league with all of you. I feel as though it keeps us connected in a small but fun way.
For this season I must say I feel quite lucky. What does it say about my FF skills that I finally win the championship while halfway across the globe, barely watching a single game, and my team was auto drafted!?! For my part I did have to make some acquisitions and I also had to keep my roster full. Regardless I'm pleased to have won despite the great competition.
Keep on keepin' on. And if any of you ever feel a desire to visit Egypt it could go without saying that Karen and I would love to host any of you.
Peace.
