Rivalry Week Update
What a great slate of games this past week – nearly every game was in doubt heading into Monday night! Only 3 weeks to go in the regular season, so we’re clearly in the stretch run. For the most part, I feel pretty good about my predictions from 3 weeks ago; here’s a quick update.
The Alphas:
A bit of reshuffling, with one new gate-crasher. After a strong run over the past month, we need to bump Quality Contorl up to this group as they now sit in 3rd place in both points and standings. Cool Runnings also have a rising stock with a lights-out 5-game win streak, and are probably the only realistic shot to take the regular season championship from the still-dominant ChalicePastryCarnage. TBD2 has slipped up a bit, losing 2 of 3, but they remain dangerous, as do the Obese Geese.
The Upper Middle Class:
Not much movement here. The Stars and Yakety Sacks still sit in reasonably good position, though neither has looked strong enough to contend for a top-four finish. The Sacks in particular are in a bit of danger after losing 3 straight, and probably need another two wins to feel confident about a playoff berth. But, the good news for this tier is that each team still controls its own destiny, which is an okay place to be at this point in the year.
The Lower Middle Class:
There are 7 teams listed above, and in the race for the final spot, two former long shots have opened up a small gap; both the Schmuckernators and Z Power are neck and neck for the eighth position with the Z’s holding the tiebreaker edge but the Schmucks having an extra game in hand. Unless a team above them falls, however, only one of these two will get in, and the Schmucks have a big advantage in ease of schedule to end the year.
The Long Shots:
The Bacon Cheeseburgers have the best chance to pull a miracle comeback, boasting the profile of a 4-5 win team despite having only 2 victories to their name. Unfortunately, the hole is pretty deep and they need quite a bit of help. The Minions and Cactus Watch Out! have almost no shot at this point (cue Lloyd Christmas), but each still has a chance to play spoiler to the Schmucks or the Sacks. Not quite as much fun as making the playoffs, but it's something.
