Google Talk....
If you haven't started using gmail yet, here's yet another reason to move to Google - Google Talk
Basically your gmail account is now an instant messenger account too! It also allows for 'calls' to other users.
Also, Google just released Google Desktop version 2, which adds a very useful sidebar. I mention this because Google talk can be added as a panel to the sidebar, making the panel a combination IM program, news feed, notepad, stock ticker, etc (and people can right more plugins for the sidebar, so you'll see everything useful become available).

Oh good grief I did... I'm apalled as well.
Well to my credit I was writing that while at work so it was only getting 33% of my brain power.
Also to my credit - I still use better grammar than 99.9% of the online community.
