Live, from Sioux Falls!
Yes, I haven't posted in a while, but I have an excuse. Last week I was in MVS orientation up at Amigo Centre, and now I am in the wonderful land of South Dakota. It seems like a ton of stuff has been happening, so let's try and get caught up, shall we?
I left Goshen Thursday evening a week and a half ago and spent the weekend at home. Then I drove up to Amigo on Monday morning/afternoon, and guess who I saw first? That's right, Paul Keim! The Goshen faculty were having a retreat on Monday and Tuesday overlapping with our orientation. It was totally unexpected and bizarre to see all of them up there, but it was really cool to touch base with all my profs and say goodbye, etc. I will miss being in Goshen this next year. The week at camp was great and made me a lot more excited for this coming year than I was going in. Again, it was kind of strange to meet 20-odd people all heading off to different parts of the U.S. and I probably won't see any of them again before May. Adam was there, as were 4 other Goshenites, and we had a great time tearing it up in our last week, being moderately naughty, etc.
So then on Friday, two days ago, I went with a group to Midway Airport and got on the L to Ohare with all my luggage for the upcoming year; it was just two suitcases and a bookbag (simple living!) and wasn't all that bad but it did take an hour and a half. By 10:30 I was in Sioux Falls by way of Cincinatti and meeting with about 6 people who I'll be seeing this year.
Here's my current situation: living in the old MVS apartment with Alice, an energetic older woman who has been here for 2 years. She's great fun and took me all around the city yesterday, helping to orient me to where things are. Sioux Falls made a great first impression - there are tons of parks, biking/walking trails, it's easy to get around, the Falls themselves are pretty neat. You all should come and visit if you get a chance. Anyway, I'll be living with her until Sept. 2 when she goes back to Canada, and then I'll be on my own until Sept. 19 when the other 2, possibly 3 VS'ers come. Sometime in the next week we'll also be moving from our apartment to a new house that's a few blocks away, so I haven't done much unpacking yet (not that there's much to unpack). I went to church today - about 25 people, went out to a picnic afterwards, families I met: Sean Kaufman, Glen Schumacher, Rachel Reimer. It's a bunch of very friendly people, I am going to really like it (except the singing isn't too strong). Tomorrow I start work, we'll see how it goes. Adam, I have been forced into the treasurer position - count yourself lucky. Well, that should make up for a bit of inactivity on my part, don't you think?
